Many Smash fans will be aware, as Sakurai-san informed us during the final Smash Direct, anyone buying Super Smash Bros. Ultimate before February 2019 can register their game game to receive the first DLC character for free, once it’s released early next year.

Smash1However, Nintendo, like the great communicators they are, made a bit of a hash of explaining how to claim the Piranha Plant DLC. By registering the software, you obtain a free download code which can be redeemed in the Nintendo Switch eShop.

Worry not, those that opted for the digital option; you will automatically be eligible to download the bitey pipe-dweller on day one. For those with the physical version, here’s a quick guide to ensure you don’t miss out.

Step 1: Register your Game via My Nintendo

This bit’s likely the part you already know, but just in case, highlight the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate software on the Switch’s home screen and press the ‘+’ button to bring up the menu pictured below.

From here, simply select ‘My Nintendo Rewards Programme’ at the bottom of the list, followed by ‘Earn Points (game card version only)’. By doing so you’ll earn some Gold Points which can be used for discounts on the eShop.

Step 2: Check your e-mail

This is the part lots of people missed. Nintendo will automatically send you an e-mail, however the e-mail is so generic-looking, it may end up in your Spam or Promotions folder.

Simply find the e-mail which contains your unique download code.

Step 3: To the eShop!

The final step is to simply launch the eShop, select ‘Redeem Code’ from the options on the left, enter the code when prompted and voila, you’re done!

Step 4: Patience…

Once the DLC launches (expected February 2019) visit the Smash Bros. page on the eShop and you should be able to download Piranha Plant without a hitch (hopefully). Now go play more Smash.

Feel free to contact the Reggie Reviews team if you want a bit of assistance with any of the above.
